Ibn Fadlan was an Arab Islamic scholar, traveler, and geographer. He served as a judge in Baghdad during the 10th century. He gave the first written description of the infidel Rus' people, including their culture, customs, religion, language, and society. According to Ibn Fadlan's account, the Rus' were divided into three groups: the Khazars, who were idolaters; the Bulgars, who had adopted Christianity; and the Greeks or "Mongols", ruled by a khagan (king).
